Irvingia Gabonensis(also known as African Mango) is rich in dietary fibers which are frequently used for the treatment of obesity. In one study the efficacy of Irvingia gabonensis (IG) in the management of obesity was evaluated in a DBRCS involving 40 subjects (mean age 42.4 years). 28 subjects received 1 gram of IG while 12 were on placebo. At the end of the one month study period the mean body weight difference observed between the IGS and the placebo groups was significant. The obese patients under IGtreatment also had a significant decrease of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and an increase of HDL-cholesterol while the placebo group did not manifest any changes in blood lipid components. IGmay be beneficial in weight loss.1
Caralluma Fimbrata (CF) is an edible cactus, used by tribal Indians to suppress hunger and enhance endurance. The effect of CF extract was assessed in 50 overweight adults in a placebo controlled randomized trial. The experimental group received 1 gram of CF per day. At the end of 30 and 60 days of intervention waist circumference and hunger levels over the observation period showed a significant decline when compared to the placebo group. Caralluma extract appears to suppress appetite, and reduce waist circumference.2
In a Japanese study scientists evaluated the effects of Kudzu (Pueraria Flower extract) on 81 obese adults (divided into 3 groups) over 12 weeks. The results indicate that PFE intake reduces BMI and decreases visceral fat. In addition, the decrease in visceral fat area showed no sexual dimorphism.3
RNA, DNA – In recombination-competent telomerase mutants, telomeric RNA-DNA hybrids promote recombination-mediated elongation events that delay the onset of cellular senescence. The regulation of TERRA transcription and telomeric RNA-DNA–hybrid formation are important determinants of both telomere-length dynamics and proliferative potential after the inactivation of telomerase.4
